Workshop: Illness-related absenteeism: Dos and don’ts

Absenteeism can take various forms. All companies experience problems caused by non-attendance. Gaining proper insight into the causes of absenteeism is the very first step in developing a structured approach toward short and long-term absenteeism. Prevention measures can then be defined in consultation with the HR department, the internal and external departments for prevention and protection in the workplace, and direct supervisors. This will allow your organisation to move towards an active attendance policy, resulting in reduced rates of illness-related absenteeism.


This basic training course provides clear insight into:

  • the complex set of rules and regulations regarding illness-related absenteeism,
  • the role of unions in developing a policy on absenteeism,
  • how to reconcile confidentiality obligations with the right for privacy through an active attendance policy,
  • the regulations regarding the monitoring of absence from work due to illness (including mandatory sickness review meetings for employees, available legal options and sanctions, the role of the medical inspector, adjudication procedures, confidentiality obligations of the medical inspector),
  • return-to-work interview options,
  • the role of the occupational health physician,
  • options and limitations of restricted work duties,
  • how to exchange best practices.


Absenteeism is not only a complex matter from a legal point of view, it is also a delicate issue. Your management team (and not just the HR team) will need proper policies in place.  

Encouraging direct supervisors throughout the organisation to take more responsibility is a first step towards motivating your workers. The problem of absenteeism is not just a matter for the HR department.

This training course will get your management team on the right track when it comes to developing an active attendance policy, adequately dealing with short and long-term absences, and engaging in a social dialogue.


This course provides practical training for managing directors, business managers, HR directors and other relevant parties.


The course takes half a day to complete and is offered as an open training course or as in-company training, with our internal legal advisor delivering the course at your premises.

To put the interactive sessions in a real-life context, participants are invited to present practical case studies to the instructor prior to the course.
