This autumn, the number of employees who are considering a flu vaccination has increased by almost one-third in comparison to last year. This was established by a survey conducted by Mensura among 1045 working Belgians. “According to a statement issued by Gretel Schrijvers, General Manager at Mensura: “The number of people considering a flu vaccine may increase if the coronavirus flares up again”.

Last year, 30% of respondents were vaccinated, while at least 39% are already considering vaccination at present. The growing interest in flu vaccinations is not only a good start, but is also crucial to maximising protection for at-risk groups.

According to the recommendations of the Superior Health Council, flu vaccination for people over 50, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, housemates and healthcare staff should be done on a priority basis. “It is however absolutely necessary for all persons who come into contact with at-risk patients, to be vaccinated this year. The flu as well as the coronavirus can attack simultaneously, which would make even non-risk groups extra vulnerable”, explains Gretel Schrijvers of Mensura.

“A vaccinated person not only protects his own health, but also helps prevent vulnerable people from coming into contact with the flu virus. Reducing the risk of a possible flu epidemic is also important to avoid overburdening the hospitals”, says Gretel Schrijvers.

Employees look to the employer to provide vaccination

The survey also reveals that no less than 6 out of 10 respondents expect their employer to provide flu vaccination. Last year, almost 7 out of 10 vaccinations against the flu were effectively provided by employers.

The personal decision on whether or not to be vaccinated also appears to be influenced by the culture within the company with regard to vaccination. 38% of the active population who obtained vaccination stated that they did so partly because their employer offers flu vaccinations free of charge. The threshold for having a general practitioner administer the flu vaccine cannot be underestimated, and disinclines people to get vaccinated. Gretel Schrijvers “A visit to the general practitioner for a prescription followed by a second consultation before the actual vaccination soon offers certain practical thresholds.  On the other hand, a scheduled inoculation on the work floor itself not only saves employees a lot of time, but also the cost of the vaccine”.
