Superior Health Council warns: "More attention needed for mental well-being"

04-03-21

The current corona pandemic is not only a medical challenge, it's also a psychosocial crisis, says the Superior Health Council. "That's why we need to make efforts to promote mental health."

In a report, the Superior Health Council points out the corona crisis' heavy impact on mental health. "People have to adjust their behaviour quickly and often, and for a long period of time. The social isolation and lack of perspective cause stress. Usually, this is temporary, but serious mental health problems can occur in the long run."

From uncertainty to exhaustion

We, too, are noticing the increasing need for psychosocial support among our clients: “At the start of the corona crisis, fear and uncertainty prevailed”, says Koen Van Hulst, Psychosocial Aspects coordinator. "Communicating clearly and having supportive conversations were the most important things in that phase."

But as the crisis continues, the demand for help to cope with the ongoing stressful situation increases. "Exhaustion is setting in in the essential sectors. The healthcare sector, in particular, is under considerable pressure. But we are also getting more and more signals from other sectors that employees are having a hard time. Some examples of problems are a team-out, anxiety and stress.”

Three action points

To promote the mental well-being of the population, the Superior Health Council has formulated three recommendations.

  1. There is a need for more recognition for the healthcare sector. Mental health professionals, in particular, need to be more actively involved in managing the corona crisis.
  2. Efficient, realistic and reliable communication is crucial for maintaining motivation.
  3. The Council emphasises the importance of work as a lever for mental well-being. In addition to financial stability, work also provides a sense of purpose and social belonging. These elements help to prevent mental health problems in the workplace.

Resilience as a starting point for mental well-being

"If we zoom in to the third action point, then strengthening the resilience of employees is the priority," emphasises Koen Van Hulst. "We work on increasing adaptability. As a result, employees have fewer problems when they have to adjust their behaviour and are better able to cope with stressful situations."

“An increase in hybrid work – a combination of office and teleworking – makes a sustainable telework policy a must. This is how organisations promote healthy and productive teleworking."

But promoting resilience and a telework policy are not always enough. A large-scale study shows that since the corona crisis, almost three times more Belgians suffer from mental health problems. It's important that employers and managers track down and deal with mental health issues in good time. This enables organisations to prevent absenteeism due to psychological problems."
