Return to work assessment
Is your protected employee returning to work after four weeks of absence? If so, the occupational physician must follow up with a return to work assessment within 10 working days.
During a return to work assessment, the occupational physician will check whether your protected employee is ready to get back to work – possibly with modifications.

Why choose a return to work medical assessment?
- A return to work medical assessment is legally required for protected employees after at least four weeks (28 calendar days) of continuous absence for medical reasons.
- The assessment tests the employee’s medical fitness: are they able to perform their allotted tasks?
- It helps to identify any risks or limitations at an early stage and thus prevent a situation where the employee relapses or becomes overburdened.
- It helps ensure a safe and responsible return to work, both for the employee and for the work environment in general.
What is a return to work assessment?
A return to work assessment takes place when a protected employee returns to the workplace after at least four weeks of continuous absence due to illness or an accident, for example.
The occupational physician carries out the assessment no later than 10 working days after the return. The physician assesses whether the employee can do their job (fully or partially), with or without temporary or permanent modifications.
