Dealing with workplace trauma
A traumatic experience at work is a major event. It has a serious and long-lasting impact on employees’ well-being and performance. That’s something you’d rather avoid. Mensura can put in place an effective prevention and management policy for your organisation. We’ll also ensure that everyone knows their role if a major event occurs. Your organisation will then be well-prepared and resilient at all times.
Witnessing or being the victim of a serious work accident, a colleague who takes their own life, a company building that goes up in flames... Anyone can experience a traumatic event, regardless of their job.
Our experts provide with a 24/7 trauma helpline. From practical and emotional assistance for managers in organising support to counselling and support for victims. What counts as workplace trauma?
Major events at work can have a profound impact on employees. If this negative effect is lasting, it’s described as trauma. The consequences can be serious: from poorer work performance to long-term absence.
Not every critical event at work is traumatic, of course. The term ‘trauma’ is only used when one or more employees have been unable to get over the situation after some time.
What are the symptoms that an experience has been traumatic?
There is a range of possible consequences of a serious or traumatic workplace experience:
memories, flashbacks, dreams or nightmares of the incident
avoidance: the victim avoids the place where it happened, the job, certain people or shifts
suppression: the event doesn’t seem to sink in, is denied or is only partially remembered
irritability
sleep problems and/or fatigue, concentration problems
a tendency to panic quickly.
What does a trauma policy contain?
A trauma policy allows you to give your employees standardised, optimal support in the event of a traumatic incident. In such a situation, support and acknowledgement reduce the risk of potentially long-term absence or the development of mental disorders.
An internal procedure describes exactly who does what. Trauma training courses for managers and employees (including those in support roles) are also provided.
