Liesbeth Billen: “As a company nurse, each day holds something new”

As a nurse, Liesbeth Billen worked for years at a hospital and, later on, at a rest home. When the coronavirus crisis was raging, she made the switch to Mensura.

“A continuous desire to learn and develop is part of who I am and I felt too limited in that respect in my previous jobs. The possibility to put the Mensura value of ‘lifelong learning’ into practice was like a breath of fresh air.

To be honest, I was not really familiar with what Mensura did. But driving a truck equipped as a doctor’s office – as stated in the job advertisement – didn’t scare me. I already had experience driving an ambulance. And getting to know different companies as a nurse also appealed to me, especially when you may be visiting them repeatedly and get better acquainted with the people there.

I must admit, however, that I was a little worried about the work being monotonous. For all I knew, most examinations consisted of taking urine samples and weighing people. Now I know that there’s so much more involved: I provide information, can carry out certain consultations on my own, answer employee questions in detail and more. I can now say from experience that every day is different and holds something new.

I would definitely recommend this job to nurses who might be having doubts. However, you should like to work independently and not be afraid of the unknown. After all, you never know where you’ll end up each day. You also need to like a challenge. Of course, there’s a certain workload involved and it can be stressful, but my supervisor is always sympathetic to my concerns. In my current job, it’s easier to put things into perspective: I’m still working with people, but not on the same acute level as in the hospital. One week with three 24-hour shifts is no longer an issue.

I also often experience recognition for the work I do, such as an email from a client to come pick up a pack of Easter eggs from reception. Even a small token of gratitude like that shows that you’re appreciated.”
