The basic first aid course trains you to be a first aid provider. You will receive theory and practical exercises, so that you can administer first aid correctly and know what to do in the event of an accident. You will receive a certificate that is valid in Belgium.

Why?

Accidents at work and occupational illness in a work situation should, of course, be prevented as much as possible. But accidents can happen at any time. And when they do, it is important that a trained first aider, with the appropriate equipment, is able to administer first aid.

Every employer of 20 employees or more is obliged to have trained first aiders available. Mensura is authorised to organise this training and will provide you with a certificate that is valid in Belgium.

Need a certificate valid in Europe?

Do you work in an international company? Then we recommend that you also obtain a European certificate in life-saving. This is possible with our 'First Aid (EHBO) - basic level with European certificate' training course.

What do you learn?

You learn the theory and practice of first aid. The tasks of a care provider are covered and you learn how to correctly evaluate an emergency situation. You will learn, among other things, how to administer first aid, how to perform CPR, how to treat common wounds and how to apply bandages. Choose how you want to follow the training: fully classroom-based or via a blended route. In a blended programme, you first follow the theory via e-learning, followed by a live practice session.

Compulsory refresher courses

After this training, you will receive a first aid certificate. The Welfare Act does require annual training for certified first aiders. Our 'Refresher training emergency response officer (first aid)' course will refresh your knowledge and skills and keep you up to date with new techniques. Your first aid certificate remains valid thanks to this further training.

The instructor went into details kept the whole group engaged and made learning very interesting and fun. He memorized our names made it personal made us feel conscious of our responsibility. I really enjoyed it." Sarah Kondagba White & Case

For whom?

This course is for anyone who want to learn the basics of first aid at work and obtain a certificate. You are legally obliged to provide a sufficient number of emergency responders in the company.

Assistance for designated persons

Certain companies must have 'designated persons'. An emergency services licence is not required, but it is necessary to have mastered the basics of first aid/support. Have a look at our 'Emergency response (first aid) for designated persons' training.

What does the law say?

Legally, as an employer of 20 employees or more, you must have certified first aiders to provide first aid in the event of an accident at work or health problems in the workplace.

The number of first aiders depends on company size, on the one hand, and the risks faced by employees, on the other. Based on these criteria, companies are divided into 4 categories: A, B, C and D. More info? Take a look at the site of the FPS WASO.

Rescue workers must have a certificate from a recognised training centre. Mensura is authorised to organise this basic first aid course.

Frequently Asked Questions

I did not attend a first aid refresher course last year. Is this a problem?

If your employer can demonstrate that annual in-service training is not necessary and the occupational physician and prevention committee gives the green light, you only need to follow the refresher course every two years.

For instance, a valid reason is that you are an emergency responder who regularly puts your first aid knowledge into practice.

I already attended a basic first aid training course. Can I register for the refresher course?

There is a wide range of first aid training on offer. But these do not always prepare you to start working as a first aid responder in a work context. You can therefore only participate in the refresher course if the course you took meets these requirements:

  • The training focused on first aid in a professional context.
  • The course lasted for at least two days.
  • After the training, you obtained a ‘first aid responder certificate’.

Does the course you took meet the requirements? Then you can register for our ‘first aid refresher course’. If not, you need to start with the basic training.

What is the difference between an initiation, a refresher course, and a basic course?

An initiation is an awareness training for all staff in your company. This ensures everyone reacts appropriately in the event of an accident. You do not receive an official certificate.

After a basic course, you receive a certificate and are then a first aider in your company. You retain that certificate on completion of the mandatory annual refresher course.

How many first aiders are needed in my organisation?

This is determined by the risk analysis. You can find a recommendation per sector here.
