What do you need to know about the risk prevention advisor level 2 training course?

Every organisation must appoint a risk prevention advisor. They map out a well-considered risk prevention and health policy. The risk prevention advisor level 2 basic module prepares employees to fulfil that role to the fullest.
Lecturer Olivier Ramont explains how ORA Academy approaches the training course.

Who can take the course?

“Any employee with an upper secondary school diploma can take the course. This means we often work with very diverse groups, ranging from HR profiles to mechanics. People will often shy away from certain technical subjects, such as electricity. But we make the course as approachable as possible, so that by the end, every participant is fully on board with the story.”

“No-nonsense attitude and straight to the point. An ideal combination for risk prevention advisors who really want to make their job meaningful.”

Ellen De Doncker

Administrative assistant at Casteleyn NV

How does the training course build on the ‘Risk Prevention Advisor Level 3′ course?

“Anyone who has taken the risk prevention advisor level 3 training course will notice that we revisit the same topics from that course. But this time, we go into more detail. General themes around risk prevention and wellbeing are covered in detail. Think, for example, of fire prevention and bringing work equipment into service. We always design the programme as flexibly as possible. During the refresher courses, groups can then indicate which issues they would like to zoom in on.

The two courses are not comparable, however. The Risk Prevention Advisor Level 2 course – with 35 teaching days, each lasting six hours – not only takes longer, but also requires more commitment from participants. Besides a written exam, they complete four group tasks and write a thesis. They defend the latter in front of a multidisciplinary examination panel at the end of the course.”

“The chance to meet other fellow students is a great added value. They often work in different business environments, so you can learn a lot from each other.”

Leander Vande Cauter

Assistant plant manager at Poppies Bakeries

“Iedere werknemer met een diploma hoger secundair onderwijs kan aan de opleiding starten. Dat maakt dat we vaak met heel uiteenlopende groepen werken, gaande van hr-profielen tot mecaniciens. Bij technische onderwerpen, zoals elektriciteit, zie je sommigen dan wel eens fronsen. Maar we maken de opleiding zo laagdrempelig mogelijk, waardoor elke deelnemer op het einde van de rit volledig mee is in het verhaal.”

What will participants work on in practice?

“The course is delivered by experts with over 20 years of experience under their belts. Every day, they work hard on risk prevention and health policies in various organisations. This allows them to give participants important insights from the field.

A practical approach to learning is central to our courses. Participants and teachers really tackle the theory and exercises together. They work in small groups, for example, on a work accident investigation based on a true scenario. A more detailed elaboration of an annual action plan and several company visits are also planned.

In addition, we put a lot of effort into communication. As a risk prevention advisor, you will come into contact with a range of profiles. It is important to be able to adapt, just like a chameleon, to different people and situations.”

“The practical lessons were a great added value. The theory lesson on firefighting, for example, was supplemented by a practical lesson where we were allowed to put out fires ourselves. Definitely an experience we won’t soon forget.”

Geoffrey Dekeyser

Prevention staff member at Jacops

What happens after the course?

“Those who pass the basic module can then choose what they want to specialise in. Through ORA Academy and Mensura, we offer a specialisation module in occupational safety. During that training course, we cover topics such as machine safety, fire prevention and Industry 4.0. With the latter, we respond to the increasing importance of artificial intelligence and robotics, among others, in the world of work.

It is important to note that participants will not obtain their Risk Prevention Advisor Level 2 certificate immediately after the basic module. They will receive their certificate only after passing one of the various specialisation modules.

Furthermore, we continue to coach participants beyond the basic module. Are they coming up against a particular issue? Would they like a refresher on theory? If so, they can always join one of our refresher courses. We organise these courses around six times a year, and they last four hours.”
