        One-day absenteeism rises, Bart Teuwen advocates prevention

        Sick notes for one-day absences have not been mandatory in large companies (more than 50 employees) since November 2022. Research at over 23,000 companies now shows that one-day absences in large companies increased by over 44% in 2023. That is three times more than in small companies (15%). But the essence of the absenteeism story is not just about abolished sick notes. Our absenteeism expert Bart Teuwen emphasises the importance of prevention and the de-medicalisation of absenteeism.

        ‘Back to Work’ fund replaces outplacement assistance after dismissal due to medical force majeure

        On 28 March 2024, the federal government issued a new decree replacing outplacement assistance for people with a long-term illness after dismissal due to medical force majeure (article 34). From now on, employers must transfer a contribution of 1,800 euros to the new ‘Back to Work’ fund, managed by the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (NIHDI/RIZIV).

        The High Council for Prevention and Protection at Work issued a favourable opinion on 15 December 2023 to facilitate the establishment of a joint internal service. If the Minister of Employment approves this opinion, it will be converted into a royal decree that makes amendments to the codex.
